Best Used SUVs for Illinois Winters

Illinois winters can bring snow, ice, freezing temperatures and changing road conditions.

If you're shopping for a used SUV in the Chicago area, winter performance may be one of the factors you consider.

But what actually makes an SUV a good choice for winter driving?

It's more than simply looking for the words "AWD" or "4WD."

AWD vs. 4WD

All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive can both be useful depending on the vehicle and driving conditions.

AWD systems are commonly found on crossovers and SUVs and can automatically distribute power between wheels depending on traction.

4WD systems are common on trucks and more traditional off-road-oriented SUVs.

The right system depends on how you use your vehicle.

Tires Matter

One of the most important factors in winter traction is the tires.

A vehicle with AWD or 4WD still needs appropriate tires.

Before buying a used SUV, inspect:

Tire tread

Tire age

Tire condition

Tire type

Uneven wear

Ground Clearance

Ground clearance can become useful when driving through accumulated snow.

SUVs vary significantly in ground clearance, so consider the roads and conditions you regularly encounter.

Winter Safety Features

Depending on the vehicle, you may find features such as:

Traction control

Stability control

ABS

Heated seats

Heated steering wheel

Remote start

AWD/4WD

Blind-spot monitoring

Forward collision warning

Features vary by year and trim, so verify the equipment on the specific vehicle.
